------------------darcy I will be traveling to Great Britain this summer and would like to do some work at a castle being renovated. My "carpentry" skills are low, but my enthusiasm makes up for the difference! How does one go about finding opportunities such as this. Any ideas or helpful hints? Philip Davis My thought about this are you don't. Renovation of castles is an expensive business and is required to be of a high standard if the castle is listed (and most of the 'good' castle are) Thus it is done by professionals under supervision of Governmental bodies. English Heritage, the organisation with responsibility for England's built heritage, do this supervision, often provide some funding and run a school where the special restoration techniques can be learnt. See their web site for details at http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/ . The situation is similar for Scotland and Wales. The Irish republic is outside my scope of knowledge and may present some opportunities of this sort.
And as I rode by Dalton-Hall Beneath the turrets high, A maiden on the castle-wall Was singing merrily: The Outlaw by Sir Walter Scott
